Numbers trap

“Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end.” ― Bob Marley

I just saw Nas Daily episode no 858 where he described an IDEA as “number trap”. For next one hour I tried searching about it in the internet. Then next one hour I tried thinking about it. Then eventually I made up my mind to write something about it.
According to Nas whenever we give some one 5Euro it make them happy till the point they think that is not enough for them. And they now want more to become happy as they were before, and it was such a simple thing that we all knew but we don’t accept it. The number trap is kind of which consumes us. Numbers provide instant gratification and without thinking a much we think that we tend to like it more, we discuss more about the things which are used by many.
If I take this IDEA from Nas and try to understand why development project fail after initial successes this could be a reason which was hidden in plain sight according me at least. For example I will mention two projects one urban and one rural both include International funding and both are very important projects in their own way. So in urban area project was done a marginalised and backward community who were living in the metropolitan city before it became a city. Though there were very few within the community who know about their rich legacy and hardly anyone from community boast about it. So in a way we could say that they are very reluctant about themselves. Their work is not so liked by the society but individuals from society comes to them. So, when and international funding organisation tried to work there with help of community based organisations.  It was dying due paucity of funds but starts working again with new found project. Beneficiaries were recruited randomly out of which many failed in the screening tests itself but they still manages to start the project. Then number trap engulfed the whole project. 1st those who were working from the beginning thought they deserve more appreciation in return they were never applauded for their work which made things sour between staff, beneficiary and management. Next beneficiaries thought they will get many thing but with time things started wearing off and now they get nothing to be part of the project except pain and suffering to such extent they want to discontinue whereas other projects which are running in the same area incentivise the beneficiary for the being part. So this is the major reason for failure of the project.
In second scenario rural setting where people were encouraged to discontinue a dominant practice and adopt a more environmental friendly practice so that they will be benefited in future. The rural setting where this project was going on is 5 hour train ride away from nearby metro city. From this village most millennials go out for further study or for work to the city, and what this project intended to achieve was to bank on the immobile population of the area who are slave to their own way of life. This projects also fails to attract any new beneficiary as they were no providing anything then why should people listen to them when they can go to other projects which provide them with implements and loans.
So what I want tell here is that “Numbers Trap” do exist and I am also trapped in it. But we can always talk about it and make ourselves aware of the bad practices we are keeping. This can be found in international relation where big countries incentivised small countries in form of aid and when it stops relations becomes sour within them.
